David at rootofjesse2 posted the below article the other day. It made me realize how much people don’t know about Catholicism – including Catholics themselves. Over the next few weeks I will be digesting this article to explain what each of the things that the “Generation X” Catholics do not know. (For those of you who are unsure of who qualifies as a Generation X person, I’ve found some conflicting age groups. Primarily Generation X is considered from 1965 to 1980 – but is generally referred to as the baby boomers babies. I have seen the dates differ from website to website but the latest I’ve ever seen is 1980. I just barely escaped that age bracket!

You might be a generaton X Catholic...
a Catholic mother’s reflection
You might be a generation X Catholic if the following have no, or little, meaning to you:
- Sacred Tradition
- Sanctifying Grace
- Sacramental
- Corporeal Works of Mercy
- Spiritual Works of Mercy
- Indulgences
- Mass Cards
- Having a Mass said for a deceased relative and/or significance
- Act of Contrition
- Scapular
- Pentecost
- 4 Marks of the Church
- 4 Last Things
- Mortal and/or Venial Sin
- Communion of Saints
- Purgatory
- Transubstantiation
- Immaculate Conception (or you believe incorrectly it was when Jesus was conceived)
- Papal Infallibility
You might be A generation X Catholic if
- You have never seen a confessional with a screen or even had an option
- You have never seen a priest from your age group unless it was from a 3rd world country
- You have no clue who your Bishop is and are not sure who the current pope is
- You do not see the value in infant Baptism
- You might think the Eucharist is a symbol of Christ instead of his real presence
- You heard very little about Saints and/or their lives
- You were taught that if you thought about it, prayed about it, and it still seems OK, then it was morally OK.
- You HAVE to go to Mass at Christmas and Easter but the rest of the time it is optional
- You can sum up all the CCD classes and 12 years of Catholic School as: God is good, Jesus loves you and love your neighbor
- You don’t know why certain people seemed to panic when you couldn’t recite the 10 commandments.
- Adultery was committed by married people. Duh!
- You would describe yourself as more spiritual than anything else..
- You think as long as someone acts OK they can get to heaven
- You have seen rosaries but think they would make a cool necklace and don’t know how to pray it
I’m quite looking forward to reading all of the upcoming posts!
